In the automotive industry, the brand and the brand design are the two most important factors in winning consumers’ hearts.
The Rat für Formgebung (http://bit.ly/1xJ8hH, German Design Council) has decided to recognize this fundamental importance of brand and brand design by organizing the first international brand and design award for the automobile industry. The contest, known as the “Automotive Brand Contest 2011,” honors outstanding achievements of carmakers in the categories of brand management, brand communication and design. The focus is on the integral and consistent use of the brand across all media and its actual products.
The judging panel of the first Automotive Brand Contest declared Kia Motors the worthy winner in two categories. In the “Brand Design” category, where strategy and focus of the brand’s overall design is rated, Kia was recognized as the “Best of the Best.”
For the “Exterior” category, in which the vehicle design itself is the main focus, three Kia models were picked as winners: the compact Sportage CUV, the upcoming Rio B-segment model and the all-new, athletic D-segment Kia Optima sedan. The Kia Optima and Kia Sportage have received prestigious design awards in the past, including the Red Dot Award (Kia Optima: “Best of the Best”) and the iF Product Design Award.
The ceremony will be held on Sep. 13, 2011 in Frankfurt at the Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA), one of the world’s largest automobile fair.
British funnyman Rowan Atkinson has set a new record on Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment, behind the wheel of a humble Kia.
His time of 1:42.2 seconds beat previous record holder and fellow comedian John Bishop's 1:42.8 lap by more than half a second. He was well ahead of the previous record holder Tom Cruise, who clocked 1:44.2.
Atkinson races an historic Ford Falcon in amateur events in the UK. He has also raced an Aston Martin V8 Zagato and a Renault G GT Turbo. He is the owner of a McLaren F1, which he has lent to Top Gear in a previous episode.
It was his first appearance on the show, and he admitted he was shy to take part because viewers would assume he'd be quick. His driving style earned praise from host Jeremy Clarkson.
"What is interesting is all your times were very consistent, as is the mark of a great racing driver. Turns out you're in the wrong career," he said.

Ever since Hyundai revealed the Genesis coupe, rumors have been flying about the possibility of Kia getting a similar car for its lineup (the 2007 Kia Kee concept is pictured and the new concepts will likely bear no resemblance to it), but it looks as though Kia wants to take it a step further. According to What Car?, Kia head Hank Lee admitted the need for something like a powerful, V-8 coupe, saying the company needs halo model to draw more customers into its showrooms. As the Genesis coupe has, a Kia sport coupe could provide a challenger for the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, or it could also potentially be positioned to rival luxury sport coupes.
It is possible the Kia coupe concepts will be based off of the long-rumored, rear-drive K9 sedan that is expected to slot above the Optima in the Kia lineup. The K9, which is coincidently also supposed to debut at this year’s Frankfurt show, is expected to make its production debut sometime in 2012.
As for what’s powering the two new Kia coupe concepts, the likely answer is a version of the Tau V-8. While the Hyundai Genesis and Equus can be paired with either the 4.6 or the new direct-injected 5.0-liter version of the Tau, Kia has only used the 4.6-liter in the past under the hood of the Borrego SUV. Kia representatives told What Car? that the company will closely gauge reaction to the concepts to help determine the direction of any future production model.
While we won’t know more about the Kia coupe concepts until the runup to September’s Frankfurt and January’s Detroit shows, we want to know what you think of Kia’s rumored plans. Should a Kia V-8, rear-drive coupe take on Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers, or should it go in a different direction? How much horsepower should it make if they built one?

A wonderful experience!

Jim Hamman helped us with the purchase of our new KIA Soul and he was super! He made it quick and easy -- my husband said it was the best car-buying experience he's ever had. Jim came in on his day off to get the job done and had everything lined up so that it went like clockwork. The car is fabulous and everyone that we met at the dealership was great. I would go back in a heartbeat and am so happy I found Jim and Broadway KIA.
