There are quite a few ways to prepare your car for safer driving in the winter. Today’s Monday Maintenance Tip is: Check your tire pressure

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Tire-pressure-1
Here are two good reasons to get down there with the gauge and unscrew the valve caps as the weather cools:

1) Tires lose a pound of pressure for every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) An underinflated tire won't "bite" through snow down to the pavement as well as one at pressure. It's similar to hydroplaning on water -- and just as dangerous. You may have heard the guidance to let air out of your tires for sand or snow to get more contact surface area. That only applies only if the surface is bottomlessly soft, like a beach or foot-deep, unplowed snow -- not the mix of cleared road, ice and packed snow most of us encounter in daily driving.

Don't forget to put the valve caps back on (or, buy new ones) when you're done. Letting in moisture, which then freezes, could let the valve core leak out air.

A very big "thank you" to Sierra L., for this outstanding review! Keep up the great work, April!

Consumer Guide names 2013 Kia Sorento to coveted “Best Buy” list!

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

2013_kia_sorento_4dr-suv_ex_fq_oem_1_500
Kia Motors America (KMA), one of the fastest-growing car companies in the U.S., has been honored by having its best-selling CUV, the U.S.-built Sorento, named to Consumer Guide’s® annual “Best Buy” list.  Consumer Guide® makes its selections by evaluating vehicles on all aspects of a consumer’s real-world driving and ownership experience.  The Sorento was selected for having a number of outstanding key attributes in the Midsize SUV category.

“Sorento earns our respect for its excellent ride and handling balance, upscale features and reasonable price,” said Tom Appel, publisher of Consumer Guide®.  “The available third-row seating and great warranty coverage are added bonuses.”

This year, a more focused evaluation process from the Consumer Guide® editorial team required vehicles to meet higher criteria in order to be recognized.  The result was a shorter and more prestigious “Best Buy” list than in previous years.  “We’re honored that Consumers Guide® has named one of our top-selling models as a ‘Best Buy,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  “The Sorento is a cornerstone for the Kia brand and is a flagship among family vehicles, offering world-class sophistication, value, safety and comfort.  Furthermore, we’re proud that this exceptional CUV is built right here in the U.S.”

Each year, Consumer Guide’s® staff drives nearly 200,000 miles to properly evaluate the pros and cons of vehicles in multiple categories.  The vehicles are test-driven in the city, on highways, in rural areas and put to virtually all aspects of everyday driving to give consumers a total picture of how each model performs.

Good afternoon, everybody! Today's Monday Maintenance Tip is: Maintain your car’s battery.

Batterry1
Maybe the manufacturer says your battery is maintenance free, but don’t you believe it! Check your battery regularly to extend its life and avoid the hassle of being stranded with a dead battery.
• Begin with the simple: keeping your battery clean. A dirty case can actually cause current to drain. Wipe with a damp rag. Use a mild detergent if necessary.
•  Next, clean the battery posts or terminals. Loosen and remove the negative cable (black or minus sign) first, then the red positive cable. Use a brass wire battery brush dipped in a paste made from a few tablespoons of baking soda and a little water.
•  Inspect the battery case for damage, such as cracks or bulges — signs that a battery needs to be replaced.
•  Reinstall the cables, positive first, and coat the terminals and clamps with a thin coating of grease to prevent new corrosion.

A very big thank you to Lindey T., for this outstanding review! Keep up the great work, April and Jim!

Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT set to Launch in Europe mid-2013

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Pro_ceed-11
Kia’s first high performance models, the three-door Kia pro_cee’d GT and the five-door Kia cee’d GT, will go on sale in mid-2013.
The two new GT models will be powered by a new version of Kia’s 1.6-litre GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine, equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger and strengthened internal components.
Power and torque outputs are dramatically increased.  Maximum power is 204 ps, up 51% over the non-turbo engine, with torque up 61% to 265 Nm.
Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, the new models’ performance targets include 0 to 100 kph acceleration in just 7.9 seconds.
Significant developments to the chassis and suspension systems will ensure that the performance credentials of these more powerful models are matched by exceptional dynamic characteristics.
To stand out from their sister cars, Kia’s pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT models will incorporate unique features that highlight the more emotionally-charged driving experience that they offer.
New grilles and lamp clusters, deeper bumpers, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and special paint finishes will result in a striking, more purposeful exterior.  The look of the GT models is also distinguished by pairs of jewelry-like, four-point LED daytime running lights, which give added character and presence, as well as aiding safety.  For the interior, the addition of Recaro sports seats, alloypedals and bespoke surface materials will create an engaging, performance-oriented ambience for the driver and passengers.
Production of the Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT is scheduled to begin at Kia’s manufacturing facility in Zilina in mid-May 2013, with cars going on sale across Europe from mid-year.  Prices and specifications will be confirmed closer to the on sale date.

Hello, everyone! We hope you all had a nice weekend! Well, December is upon us and we have a seasonal Monday Maintenance Tip for you! Today's tip: Run your AC in winter.

To keep your car’s air-conditioning system fit for the next warm season, run it a few times throughout the winter. This will prevent moving parts in the compressor from seizing. Also, circulating the refrigerant will help keep the seals soft and pliant.

Good afternoon, everyone! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and weekend! Now that the weekend is over it's time for us to check in with another Monday Maintenance Tip for you all! Today's tip: Spark plugs do need changing.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Old_and_new_spark_plugs_2
The advent of electronic ignition and on-board computers has eliminated the need for regular tune-ups, but you still need to change your spark plugs. Many manufacturers recommend changing plugs every 30,000 or 40,000 miles (48,000 or 64,000 km) to ensure good fuel mileage and engine performance. Some new cars come with long-life plugs (sometimes called double platinum plugs) that can last for 100,000 miles (160,000 km). If your car isn’t so equipped, make the switch after 30,000 miles. The extra cost is only a few dollars per spark plug. While you’re at it, change your spark plug wires as well. Their typical life is 50,000 miles (80,000 km). Deteriorated wires can cause those high-tech new spark plugs to foul.

Very big thank yous to both Rena and Esther, for the excellent reviews! Keep up the great work team!

Good afternoon everyone, just checking in with another Monday Maintenance Tip for you. Today's tip: Don’t Forget the PCV Valve

Pcv-valve-replacing-a-pcv-valve_00
The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve is an emissions control device on older cars — check your service manual to see if your car has one.  The valve recirculates partially burned gases from the engine’s crankcase to the combustion chamber. Important to a properly functioning engine, the valve should be changed every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or as specified in your owner’s manual. In addition to helping you get the most from a tank of gasoline, it helps to prevent the buildup of harmful sludge and corrosion.  When replacing your PCV valve, be sure you use the correct one or you may damage your engine.

A big thank you to, E H., for the stellar review! Keep up the excellent work, April!

Hyundai and Kia Initiate Voluntary Program to Adjust Fuel Economy Ratings on Select Vehicles

Kia
Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America today announced that, following discussions with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), they are voluntarily adjusting the fuel economy ratings for approximately 900,000, or 35 percent of, 2011-13 model year vehicles sold through October 31, 2012.

Procedural errors at the automakers’ joint testing operations in Korea led to incorrect fuel economy ratings for select vehicle lines. As part of Hyundai/Kia’s corrective actions, the fuel economy ratings for vehicles currently in showrooms are being voluntarily relabeled. With these changes, the 2012 Hyundai/Kia fleet fuel economy level is reduced by an average of 3 percent – from 27 to 26 MPG.

“I sincerely apologize to all affected Hyundai and Kia customers, and I regret these errors occurred,” said Dr. W. C. Yang, chief technology officer of Hyundai/Kia research and development.  “Following up on the EPA’s audit results, we have taken immediate action to make the necessary rating changes and process corrections.”

Both companies are putting in place a comprehensive reimbursement program for affected current and former vehicle owners to cover the additional fuel costs associated with the fuel economy rating change.  Customers will receive a personalized debit card that will reimburse them for their difference in the EPA combined fuel economy rating, based on the fuel price in their area and their own actual miles driven.  In addition, as an acknowledgement of the inconvenience this may cause, we will add an extra 15 percent to the reimbursement amount.  Current owners will be able to refresh their debit card for as long as they own the vehicle. Prior owners of affected vehicles who have already sold their cars will also be reimbursed using the same formula.  For more information about reimbursement and a complete list of eligible vehicles, customers can visit www.HyundaiMPGinfo.com and www.KiaMPGinfo.com.

The fuel economy rating discrepancies resulted from procedural errors during a process called “coastdown” testing at the companies’ joint testing operations in Korea.  Coastdown testing simulates aerodynamic drag, tire rolling resistance and drivetrain frictional losses and provides the technical data used to program the test dynamometers that generate EPA fuel economy ratings.  Affected vehicles and their before-and-after EPA estimates are shown in the attachment.

Hyundai and Kia will continue to advance improvements in fuel efficiency through technology and innovation, and continue to fully support the recent rulemaking issued by EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Given the importance of fuel efficiency to all of us, we’re extremely sorry about these errors,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.  “When we say to Hyundai owners, ‘We’ve got your back,’ that’s an assurance we don’t take lightly. We’re going to make this right for everyone, and we’ll be more driven than ever to ensure our vehicles deliver outstanding fuel economy.”

“As a customer-focused organization, we are fully committed to providing consumers with complete and accurate information, and deeply regret the errors were made,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO, Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.  “Our reimbursement program is intended to ensure that all affected Kia customers quickly receive fair compensation.”

Braodway Kia - (4) Star Review on Yelp

  • Had a very positive experience at Broadway Kia.  A salesman asked what kind of car we were interested in and then asked if we would like to test drive any.  We explained that we were not too interested in crazy bells and whistles.  After inquiring about price, and getting that information we chose 2 cars to test drive.  One we drove on a city street loop, and the other we went on a freeway loop.

As it was cold out, the salesman sat with us in the car, with the heater on, and explained how everything worked, if we had any questions, if we were ready or not to purchase at this time.

We choose one of the cars we test drove.  April helped us with the paperwork which took 20 minutes only, AND synced our phones to the car's system, so our calls come through the car speakers.

Great experience, all in all. -Susan Z.

5 easy DIY car maintenance moves for fall

Diy-maintenance-1-intro-lg
With autumn's shorter days, cooler temperatures and inclement weather drawing closer, now is a good time to get your car ready for the demands of the coming driving season.

Although some seasonal car maintenance will require the assistance of a qualified car mechanic, here are five, simple do-it-yourself car maintenance projects to make your auto better prepared for fall and save you the labor cost of having these services done by a mechanic.

Diy-maintenance-2-wiperblades-lg
1. "Wiper blades should be replaced annually every fall," says Tony Molla, spokesman for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in Leesburg, Va. "You generally use your wipers more frequently in the fall and winter. They'll also be taking a lot more abuse from road grime and windshield-washer solvent, so it's best to have a fresh set then."

Fortunately, replacing wiper blades as part of car maintenance is very easy and requires no tools. They cost from $10 to $20. Be aware that some cars will require same-sized blades for the driver and passenger sides, while others will require a longer blade for the driver-side wiper. So, be sure to consult the in-store sizing guide to buy the right ones. And don't forget to buy a third blade if you own a hatchback, station wagon or SUV, with a wiper for the rear window.

Diy-maintenance-3-spare-tire-lg
2. "Autumn is also a good time to check your spare tire to ensure that it is properly inflated," says Jim Travers, associate editor for autos at Consumer Reports and familiar with car maintenance. The typical space-saver spare tire found in most cars must be inflated to the inflation pressure listed on the side of the tire. A tire pressure gauge costs $7 to $20.

"Spare tires on pickup trucks and sport utilities are suspended underneath the vehicle on a cable, and that mechanism requires regular attention," says Pat Goss, master technician of PBS's "MotorWeek." Lower and raise that under-car spare to check if the cable mechanism works freely. In fall, spray it with a rust penetrant like WD-40 and then lube with white lithium grease. If the mechanism has seized, repair it immediately.

Tire pressure drops one PSI, or pound per square inch, for every 10-degree drop in temperature, according to the AAA, so check your tires on a weekly basis. The proper inflation pressure will generally be listed in your vehicle's owner manual and/or noted on a sticker located on the driver's doorjamb.

Diy-maintenance-4-fluids-lg
3. "In fall, windshield-washer fluid needs to be replaced with a solvent that is suited for use in cold weather," says Molla. The washer fluid costs $2 to $4 per gallon, depending on the brand and whether it has antifreeze mixed in.

Travers says autumn is also a good time to check your level of antifreeze ($10 to $16 per gallon) in the coolant recovery reservoir. In this car maintenance move, if you find that you are below the required minimum stamped onto the side of that opaque container, add the appropriate quantity of properly diluted fluid to that reservoir and not to the radiator. Make sure that you use the correct fluid because green and orange antifreeze/coolant cannot be mixed.

Checking the brake-fluid reservoir is also a good idea. If the level is low, top it off with the appropriate type of brake fluid ($3.50 to $17 per container, depending on the type). "As your brakes wear, it's normal for the fluid to go down a bit," says Molla. "However, if you notice a bigger decrease, that could be an indication that you have a leak or other issue in the braking system."

Diy-maintenance-5-airfilter-lg
4. At a minimum, engine air filters ($11.50 to $53 per filter, depending on brand) should be replaced twice per year as part of car maintenance. So, if you haven't done so already, replacing your car's air filter is a good idea. When an air filter reaches the point where it causes enough of a pressure drop to restrict airflow, the car's fuel economy, performance and emissions begin to deteriorate, getting progressively worse until the dirty filter is replaced.

"Fortunately, it's easy to replace an engine air filter and, again, it's a job anyone can do without tools," says Travers.

Diy-maintenance-6-battery-lg
5. "Many electrical issues and ignition problems stem from loose or corroded battery connections," says Travers. "If you notice corrosion on the posts or cable connectors, use an appropriate brush ($4 per brush.) This is a very inexpensive, yet handy tool that you can get at any auto parts store. And clean both (posts) completely, and then reconnect everything snuggly and securely."

As part of regular car maintenance, and for safety, make sure all of the car's lights are working; it's important for you to see, as well as be seen, during autumn's longer and darker nights, adds Molla. "Replacement bulbs will typically cost a dollar or two, with the exception of headlight bulbs, of course. They're considerably more expensive, but you can replace them all quite easily on your own without tools and save yourself a hefty labor charge in the process."

Headlight bulbs range in price from $14 to $27 for a single bulb to $25 to $50 for a dual pack.

2013 Kia Forte Koup Inspired by The Flash Set for 2012 SEMA Show

2013_kia_forte-koup_det_ns_101912_717
Just the Facts:
Kia will unveil four of its new Justice League-inspired custom rides at the upcoming 2012 SEMA Show.
One of the cars is a 2013 Kia Forte Koup that honors The Flash, the superhero said to be the fastest man alive.
The three other Kias get their inspiration from Aquaman, Cyborg and Green Lantern.

Kia Motors America is set to unveil four more of its new Justice League-inspired custom rides at the upcoming 2012 SEMA Show, including a 2013 Kia Forte Koup that honors The Flash.

Kia already unveiled its first superhero ride, a 2013 Optima SX Limited inspired by Batman.

The Flash superhero is said to be the "fastest man alive."

Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg and Green Lantern will be the inspiration for this set of four customized vehicles that are being built thanks to Kia's partnership with DC Entertainment.

To hype up the unveiling, the automaker has released a teaser image of the custom 2013 Kia Forte Koup. All that is visible is the front of the car, which features a translucent Flash logo on the hood and custom paint job. Presumably the special Kia gets a lot of power in honor of its namesake. The car was put together with West Coast Customs and makes its public debut at the Kia booth on October 30.

A total of eight superhero Kias will be built as part of the automaker's 10-month membership with DC Entertainment. The cars raise awareness for the "We Can Be Heroes" famine relief campaign, and will eventually be auctioned off to benefit the charity.

The 2012 SEMA Show runs from October 30 to November 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Edmunds says: We will soon see if The Flash is better inspiration for a custom ride than Batman.

  • I bought a 2011 Kia Soul from Erica Hood today, when I really only meant to be having the HV Water Pump on my 2007 Prius replaced. I've paid cash for cars and spent longer in the dealership than I did today; Erica understood that my baby was waiting at home and I didn't have time to goof around. We got the financing to where I needed it to be in spite of some serious challenges, and I drove off the lot with a car that my carseat actually fits in safely. These are all pretty great reasons to talk to Erica @ Broadway Kia, but I think the biggest one is her attitude. I'd like to think I'm a good judge of character - I've been fooled before, but given my job my BS detector is pretty solid - and she is sweet and genuine in a way that me feel comfortable in my impulsive purchase decision.

Oh, and my husband is pretty happy with the car too. :) -Samantha B.

This Awesome Batman-Inspired Kia Has Bat Signal Headlights

Batman-kia-optima
If Batman ever decided to step away from his atrocious and beastly black ride and chose to drive a Kia instead, this is probably the car youd sport the vigilante in.

As part of DC Entertainments "We Can Be Heroes" campaign, Kia developed this Batman-inspired Optima SX with artist Jim Lee and Rides magazine lending a hand.

To make its debut in the New Yorks Time Warner Center this week, the car includes a flattering bodykit, 20-inch wheels, a matte and piano black paintjob, a yellow underglow, a Batwing-shaped grille and HID headlights etched with the Bat-Signal.

With lots of black leather packing the interiors, the car also includes a Batsuit and cowl in the trunk, just in case Batman requires a change of clothes.
