Kia Motors' U.S. Corporate Campus Honored with "Good Design is Good Business Award" by Architectural Record

Architectural-record-logo
Kia Motors America (KMA), the fastest-growing car company in the United States1, celebrates another prestigious architectural accolade, as the KMA Corporate Headquarters and state-of-the-art Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in Irvine, California have been honored with the "Good Design is Good Business Award" by Architectural Record. In its 15th year, the award celebrates architecture as a vehicle to enhance the company's bottom line and the architect/client collaborations responsible for them that prioritize quality of life, community outreach and sustainability to achieve their goals. Judging parameters included sustainability, work environment, employee recruitment, retention, performance and productivity, branding, culture, development of new work tools, and space for amenities like exercise facilities. As part of the honor, Kia's corporate campus will be featured in the May issue of Architectural Record.

Representing a total investment of $130 million, the 21.7 acre campus was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. The 239,000-square-foot modern glass and steel main structure features two administrative office and research buildings connected by an expansive entry and vehicle display area topped by executive offices. Other common spaces are organized around the light-filled public space that links the entry to a 36,000 square-foot reflecting pool and views to the hills beyond. The state-of-the-art, 100,700-square-foot U.S. design center features a covered entry and extensive design and modeling studios, workshops and presentation rooms. Both buildings are integrated with landscaping and parking areas to create a cohesive campus prominently visible to drivers on the adjacent Interstate 5.

KMA was one of the first companies in Irvine to voluntarily install an eco-friendly bioswale system in its parking lot to remove silt and pollution from surface water runoff. The landscaping features drought-resistant plants, and reclaimed water is used for landscaping irrigation and toilets. SOM provided full-service architecture and interior design. The team also included Nabih Youssef, structural engineers; MEP engineers; Tom Leader, Landscape architect, and PBQA, lighting designers. The property is managed by RiverRock Real Estate Group, Inc.

"As the fastest growing automotive brand in the U.S. Kia is committed to providing cutting-edge vehicles with world-class design, and our Corporate Headquarters and Design Center reflect that same philosophy," said John Yoon, vice president of human resources/administration and general counsel, KMA. "The corporate campus symbolizes innovation through leading architectural design, as well as Kia's ongoing commitment to the U.S. market, which has led to our record-breaking sales and market share increases."

The campus also features a state-of-the-art workout facility with the latest equipment and with exercise classes offered to employees during the day, as well as an on-site cafeteria and lunchroom. The Multi-purpose room found in the lobby area also is available to community groups as a meeting or event function space when not in use by KMA.

KMA and KDCA previously were recognized with "The Outstanding Building of the Year" (TOBY) award for corporate facility from the Orange County chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), an Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects' Orange County chapter (AIAOC), and also recognized on the 2009 International Architecture Awards List, presented by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd.

Exemplifying "Good Design is Good Business," Kia's U.S. sales are up 31.8 percent year-to-date, while March marked the brand's 19th straight monthly sales record with 80 percent of sales in March, including vehicles that achieve more than 30 highway miles per gallon2.

"Kia Motors' U.S. corporate campus proves that thoughtful, rational design can be a powerful engine for business growth and talent retention," said Brian Lee, Design Partner, SOM. "The project exemplifies SOM's commitment to provide our clients with high-performance design that adds value to their brand and expresses their corporate identity."

Architecture and design has become a top priority for leaders of business and industry looking to rebrand, boost productivity, and attract customers. The Architectural Record Good Design is Good Business (GDGB) Awards program honors the architects and clients who best utilize design to achieve such strategic objectives. Kia's Unprecedented Growth
Kia Motors is one of the world's fastest moving global automotive brands; from 2009-2011 Kia launched more new vehicles in the U.S. than any other automaker, and under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer earned a reputation as an industry leader in automotive styling. Kia Motors America's full line of fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive cars and CUVs has earned critical acclaim and dramatically increased consumer awareness, perception and consideration for the brand. In 2011, KMA recorded its 17th consecutive year of market share growth, thanks in part to the largest increase of any major brand in perceived quality3 and the industry's highest brand loyalty ranking4. Kia's U.S.-based manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia – KMMG – is responsible for the creation of more than 10,000 plant and supplier jobs and builds the company's two best-selling vehicles in the U.S. – the Sorento CUV and Optima midsize sedan5. Kia's value-and technology-laden 2012 model year lineup also includes the Sportage compact CUV, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Optima Hybrid, Forte compact sedan, Forte 5-door compact hatchback, Forte Koup two-door coupe, all-new Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and Sedona minivan.

Kia Racing's Optima Program Builds Momentum as Pirelli World Challenge Championships Heads to Miller Motorsports Park

Corporate042412
Following an historic performance on the Streets of Long Beach in which Colin Braun put the No. 38 Infinity Audio Optima on the podium in just its third race, Kia Racing sets its sights on Miller Motorsports Park outside Salt Lake City for round four of the Pirelli World Challenge Championships (PWC). Braun and teammate Michael Galati (No. 36) are currently seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Grand Touring Sport (GTS) point's battle. Thanks to his success at Long Beach, Braun's No. 38 Optima will carry 21.75 pounds of "reward weight" at Miller, which at 3.1 miles long is the largest track the PWC visits this season and the polar opposite of the tight, concrete-walled temporary street circuits in St. Petersburg and Long Beach where the Optimas have raced thus far.

Kia Racing looks to build off its podium finish at Long Beach as the Pirelli World Challenge Championships head to Miller Motorsports Park.

The Infinity Audio Optimas won't be the only Kia racing machines at Miller Motorsports Park this weekend as the B-Spec Rio 5-door will also be on-hand for tight, door-handle-to-door-handle action against other subcompact competitors in three separate races. Two Kia racers are entered for this inaugural B-Spec event, one for Russell Smith, co-owner of Kinetic Motorsports (No. 90) and one for veteran kart racer Michael Lliteras (No. 92).

"Our first World Challenge podium came much sooner than we'd expected, especially given how competitive this series is," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "The fact that we are running near the front this early in the Optima program's history is a testament to the hard work put in by the entire Kia Racing team. Miller, however, should pose a very different challenge than the two street circuits we've run on so far, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for a solid performance. And, of course, we are excited to get our first glimpse of the Rio 5-doors on the track in B-Spec."

With Kinetic Motorsports based outside Atlanta, the team opted to prepare the No. 36 and No. 38 Infinity Audio Optimas for Miller in the service garages at the Kia Motors America (KMA) corporate campus in Irvine, Calif., rather than make the cross-country trek back to their shop. On Monday, April 16, the team presented the third-place trophy from Long Beach to team members at KMA, many of whom attended the Long Beach race, and thanked them for their support of the Kia Racing program. Since the Optimas have never run at Miller before, Kinetic will test both cars on the performance dynamometer at a local Salt Lake City shop prior to the race to make sure the engines perform up to spec in the higher elevation's thin air. The Optimas' turbocharged gasoline direct injected (GDI) engines should offer an advantage over the mostly normally aspirated GTS field.

Round four of the PWC season at Miller Motorsports Park takes place on Saturday, April 28 at 4:35 p.m. ET. Check out live race status, photos and updates at www.facebook.com/kiaracing, and watch live streaming race coverage at world-challengetv.com. Race fans can also tune in for television coverage on the NBC Sports Network on Sunday, May 27 at 11 p.m. ET. (Time and date subject to change. Check local listings).

Can't you just see yourself behind the wheel of this 2012 Kia Sorento? Come see for yourself at Broadway Kia today!

Thank you to the author of this post for reflecting on your most recent visit with us! Keep up the good work team!

Dealer-rater-logo
Broadway Kia - (5) Star Review on DealerRater

  • My experiences at Broadway have been outstanding from day one!
They are always very attentive and customer focused, always asking how I'm doing, what brings me in today, then how's the car. They always ask about me first! I have been told I have the most miles on my Optima, so they are always asking about my ownership experiences (very satisfactory, great product!).

Service has been outstanding with the technicians always friendly and informative. I had a very small oil leak and the technician came and got me to see it myself! This was discovered during an oil change. They could have just told me, and left it at that, but I was invited to look for myself. I realize not everyone would want to go into the work area, but instead of assuming I wouldn't, they gave me the choice. Very considerate!

I have never once been left fending for myself, if a rental was needed, it was offered. If I had a question, I got an answer or we looked for one together. I have never left feeling disappointed, or like I've wasted my time. I have had the privilege of working with these great people, and trust them completely. Jeffrey and Eric are always talking about the product with me, as well as what to expect during service or warranty work. I feel like I'm part of a family, and not just the owner of a product. I am always offered a free car wash at each service visit or oil change. They take great care of always returning the car to me in perfect condition. I sometimes stop in if I'm in the neighborhood, just to say hi and am always greeted by a friendly face with a smile.
It's these small considerations that really make the difference in my car ownership experience.

As a customer, I am very pleased. As a consumer, I believe I own an incredible product! After all, isn't that the way we all want to feel with any purchase, whether a blender or a house?

Thanks everyone, for taking great care of me and my KIA! -OptimaSX274

Best Bang for the Buck: Crossovers

6a00d83451b3c669e201630089f91a970d-800wi
Faithful readers know I would never bury the lead, so here it is: The Kia Optima Hybrid is my pick for the best commuting sedan under $35,000.

But wait, say the faithful, the Optima Hybrid’s base price is only $26,450, including delivery. Exactly.

The Optima Hybrid is not a perfect car, to be sure. The powertrain software is strangely moody at times. The trunk is a little tight. It’s about as exhilarating as a bolus of laudanum, thus the “commuting” qualifier. It’s just that it is otherwise such a staggering amount of car for the money. Kia’s PR team thoughtfully equipped my test car with the Hybrid Premium Technology package ($5,350, for a total out-the-door price of $32,615), a hugely persuasive and Lexus-like list of upgrades including navigation with SiriusXM traffic info; rear-camera display; an excellent Infinity eight-speaker sound system with subwoofer; panoramic sunroof with blacked out B-pillars (those are the roof supports between the front and rear doors that, when blacked out, sleek-ify the car’s profile); heated and ventilated front seats; and a heated steering wheel and rear seats.

I admit I am susceptible to the euphoric effects of a heated steering wheel, and I don’t even live in the Snow Belt. I further concede that all this low-cost, high-tech gear has the power to redeem a harvest-gold 1972 Mercury Montego (pause for wistful nostalgia here). My point is, if you’re ponying up for a new car of this size/performance/price, the full-kit Optima is dispositive. It will make you happy. It will make you comfortable. Your butt will thank you.

Honda and Acura trail-blazed the one-price, tech-package approach and it has served those companies well. Kia’s doubling down on discount amenities is a beautiful way to get consumers to take the car and the brand seriously, and it seems to be working. As of March, Kia is the fastest-growing car company in the U.S., in part thanks to the record 15,000 Optimas that passed through dealership doors last month.

So that’s the rational, arithmetical, bang-per-buck argument. The irrational argument consists of the fact that the Optima is the best-looking car in its class: uncommonly lithe and handsomely proportioned for a front-wheel-drive sedan. A tapering chrome bow arcs fluidly over the roofline from the A pillar to the short rear deck, which helps visually lighten and lengthen the roofline.

Later this year the Optima will get some competition in the swimsuit competition from the redesigned-for-2013 Ford Fusion, a car that, Aston Martin cues notwithstanding, looks an awful lot like the Optima. In the meantime, the Optima is the Miss Venezuela of the mid-to-full-size, C/D segment, which includes the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Buick Verano, Subaru Legacy, Chevrolet Malibu and the furiously styled Hyundai Sonata, which is the corporate sibling and mechanical clone of the Optima.

The All New Kia K9 Interior

Kia-k9-interior-1
Kia K9 is the Korean car maker’s new flagship model, a rear-drive luxury saloon that features a whole new design philosophy and introduces Kia to a whole new market beyond everything they’ve ever experienced. The car first launches in Korea, before reaching other markets around the world under a different name. Now, Kia just released the first pictures of the K9′s interior.

The cabin too is a first by Kia, both design-wise and in terms fo quality and finish. Up to the minute gadgets, soft touch materials everywhere, luxurious feel and look, a BMW-like gear lever, and a Mercedes-like knob for controlling the infotainment system, these are just some of the evidences Kia K9 features an interior that can rival that of the finest German saloons.

Kia Racing and Colin Braun Capture First Pirelli World Challenge Podium Finish on the Streets of Long Beach

Corporate041612
In just its third Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) race, Kia Racing today recorded its first-ever podium finish on the legendary Streets of Long Beach circuit in front of a huge crowd of home-town fans and Kia employees. Unlike the first two rounds of the PWC in St. Petersburg last month, the 50-minute sprint race in Southern California was run without any full-course caution flags, enabling Braun to separate from the majority of the Grand Touring Sport (GTS) class and bring the No. 38 Infinity Audio Optima home in third place.

Colin Braun in the No. 38 Infinity Audio Optima captures Kia Racing's first-ever podium finish at the Streets of Long Beach.

"It's fantastic to get our first podium in just our third race with the Optimas, and to do it in front of a big crowd of Kia Racing fans makes it even more special," said Braun. "I had to work hard to stay out of trouble, which can be difficult on this street circuit, but I can't think of a better way to spend my honeymoon."

After a great qualifying session in the morning, which placed Kia's two Optimas third and fourth on the grid, Kia Racing started the race side-by-side on the second row and battled with Justin Bell's Ford Mustang before settling into a groove and running nose to tail in fourth and fifth place. The Optimas separated when a flat-spotted tire caused Michael Galati to take the No. 36 Optima to pit lane for a replacement midway through the race. He would ultimately recover to finish 11th in class. Braun remained strong for the duration of the race en route to the final spot on the podium.

"Our Southern California racing debut was a big day for Kia Racing, Colin Braun and our partner, Kinetic Motorsports, who put on a great show for the Kia team members in attendance." said Michael Sprague, VP Marketing & Communications, KMA. "Securing the Optima's first podium in Long Beach is something we will remember for a long time."

Race fans can watch the No. 38 Optima race to Kia's first-ever Pirelli World Challenge podium on the NBC Sports Network on Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. ET. (Time and date subject to change. Check local listings). Round four of the PWC will take place at Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday, April 28 at 2:35 p.m. MT/ 1:35 p.m. PT. Check out live race status, photos and updates at facebook.com/kiaracing, and watch live streaming race coverage at world-challengetv.com.

Peppy Kia Rio Ex Kicks Off Greener Car Reviews

Kia-reo-eco-2012
Today we begin here at Navelgazing's "Ride Me" lot one in an occasional--and someday, perhaps, weekly--series on consumer vehicles powered by water, natural gas, electricity, hybrid motors, high-efficiency gasoline engines, my tears or other alternative sources.

Kicking things off is the peppy little 2012 Kia Rio Ex, an eye-opening 5-door compact that would do nicely for daily commutes and for anyone fuming over the recent price spikes at the pump.

Now, I have to admit a prejudice before I turned the key on this little silver charmer. Pep is not something I had associated with South Korea's Kia brand. I based that, unfairly I know now, on a single test drive while shopping for a sedan years ago. Whatever model I was in, it was gutless, especially when I took it on the freeway, especially when the salesman in the back seat was marveling over how much power it had when it didn't. The dent in the back of my neck from his erect Pinocchio nose cleared up only recently.

Tooling around town, and on Orange County's freeways, my Kia Rio Ex loaner provided all the get-up-and-go I needed to keep from being left in the dust bunnies. That's courtesy of a direct-injection, 138 hp, 1.6 liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine. The front wheel drive ride has a 6-speed automatic "with Active Eco System" and electric power steering.

It was only when I had the car filled with people and gear, merging onto a freeway in San Diego, did I detect some sluggishness. Must be something in the water down there. Yup, I'd loaded the little bugger with four adults and one toddler for a family trip to see relatives. Going there, driving to dinner in the shadow of the Del Mar racetrack and heading home presented no such un-pep-ness. And I'd forgetten about that one merger incident by the time I (quickly) caught up with the flow of traffic.

The bigger issue for me came while driving in the city. As with some hybrids, to save gas the engine essentially shuts off while you are stopped, quickly re-starting when you press the gas pedal. It's a sound and feeling that take some getting used to. Believe it or not, I could never work myself into a situation where there was constant stop-and-go traffic to truly gauge how annoying this might be. As it was, I got used to the sensation, especially when I realized I was saving petrol.

Those who have issues parallel parking, or just backing up in general, will appreciate the rear view on the dash's 7-inch screen, provided by a tiny camera on the back hatch. Those who have issues with braking will appreciate the traction, electronic stability and anti-lock braking systems.

The front half of the passenger compartment is plenty roomy. The back was fine for the adults sitting on either side of a baby seat, although it likely would have gotten old had we traveled more than 60 miles. Not that anyone should expect full-size comfort from a compact. Remove those free riders, push down the split rear seats, and you've got a nice amount of room for hauling or whatever it is you sickos do back there. Even with the rear seats up, there's decent cargo room (although see one knock related to this on the next page).

To make a pleasant ride more so, the Kia Rio Ex includes USB inputs, a trip computer, cruise control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, power windows and locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio, Sirius satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless technology, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power heated outside windows--all standard. My model had such extras as alloy wheels, front fog lights, auto headlights, Microsoft's UVO in-vehicle infotainment system and illuminated vanity mirrors.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $16,500 without the extras, $17,995 with the aforementioned add-ons. You'll make up the grand and half at the pump--in one year. Fuel economy estimates from the EPA show the fully loaded model gets 30 mpg in the city, 40 on the highway. The California Air Resources Board gives it a global warming score of 9 (10 being cleanest) and a smog score of 5, the industry average.

2012 Kia Rio Named to Best Cars for Teens List by VroomGirls.com

Kiariohatchback-1
The award-winning Kia Rio has been honored once again, this time as one of the "Six Best New Cars for your Teenager" by Vroomgirls.com – the first comprehensive automotive website created by and for women. The site hailed the Rio for its modern styling, high fuel economy and exceptional overall value. Also highlighted was the subcompact's abundance of standard amenities, including USB connectivity and steering-wheel controls, while Rio's impressive warranty and available navigation system received nods as well.

"Rio being recognized as one of the 'Six Best New Cars for your Teenager' by Vroomgirls.com further validates all of the virtues which have made it popular with both parents and young drivers," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, Kia Motors America (KMA). "Excelling in design, fuel economy, value and driving enjoyment makes the Rio a truly well-rounded choice in the competitive subcompact segment."

Editors from Vroomgirls.com evaluated vehicles based on several main parental-focused criteria, including safety, reliability and value, but also considered factors important to teenage drivers such as user-content, fun-to-drive character and styling. Vroomgirls.com selected the vehicles that offer the best combination of these characteristics.

"Parents want a safe, reliable car for their kids, but teens only care about what's cool," said Tara Weingarten, Vroomgirls.com editor-in-chief. "The 2012 Kia Rio checks both of those boxes."
