2012 Kia Rio brings 'start-stop' technology to masses

Riox-wide-community
The drumbeat of idling engines at stoplights is starting to be replaced by dead silence.

It's the result of more use of "start-stop" engine technology that shuts off the engine when the car is stopped for more than few seconds, then restarts it, in most systems, when the driver releases the brake.

Commonly used in hybrids, it's just now coming to conventional vehicles in the U.S. market -- mostly high-end vehicles. Though it requires some tricky electronic controls, in a conventional car, a start-stop system requires only a beefed-up battery and starter and a few other parts.

Enter the 2012 Kia Rio subcompact, due in showrooms next month. The most inexpensive car in Kia's lineup -- today, Kia will announce a Rio starting price of $14,350 with shipping -- will offer start-stop as the centerpiece of a $400 "Eco" option on the redesigned 2012.

Kia -- at a price for the masses -- joins BMW and Porsche, which offer start-stop in the U.S. on several new models.

This could be the start of a start-stop wave, says John O'Dell, a senior editor Edmunds.com, who sees it on more than half of all models within five years. ""It's going to be very popular. It's a fairly inexpensive way to get a 3% to 5% fuel-economy increase."

That's a big deal as automakers race to find the cost-effective technology to raise average fuel economy to the required 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.

Why don't more cars have it? It's partly because of how the Environmental Protection Agency conducts its tests.

With only about six parts, start-stop was a fairly simple addition to save gas in the Rio, says Kia product planner Steve Kosowski. He says Rio owners will gain, even though they won't see it reflected in the window-sticker mileage rating because of the EPA's test procedures.

The non-start-stop Rio will be rated the same as its sibling, the 2012 Hyundai Accent, which doesn't have stop-start. But because the EPA test cycle used few stops long enough for the engine to shut off, Kia estimates that a Rio with start-stop would rate just .1 or .2 mpg higher for city driving, But Kia says it will have much more impact in the real world for owners who choose the option.

Automakers currently are lobbying the government for testing that better counts start-stop in mileage ratings, as is done in Europe.

Kia to build the GT sports sedan?

1229379821
Kia is chuffed by the positive sentiments that the public expressed towards its stylish GT concept at the Frankfurt show last week, so much so that it seems they want to put it into production.

While not officially confirming it, Kia's European boss Paul Philpott, during an interview with Autocar, said: "Almost everyone has accepted the GT as being the right kind of car for Kia, and that says we're ready to stretch the brand further. If we can get the same reaction globally as we did in Frankfurt then the GT can play a key role in moving the whole brand forward."

Autocar also stated that the GT is expected to see the light of day in 2013, after the brand has finished renewing its normal range of cars. Our bet is that a somewhat more subtle looking large sedan, with styling elements influenced by the GT concept, will be what Kia finally builds for the public.

The company already has the technical ingredients to produce such a car without incurring huge costs if it uses the rear-wheel drive platform of the Hyundai Genesis sedan and its range of V6 and V8 petrol engines.

The concept itself is powered by a 294kW 3.3-litre turbocharged direct injection V6 linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. If Hyundai invests in producing such an engine by the time the GT is due for production then perhaps a V8 would not even be necessary.

Regardless of what happens, it seems Kia is at least intent on building more desirable, high-end cars to supplement its increasingly appealing range of budget beaters.

Kia sets fuel record

739896
Kia Motors has set a new Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid petrol vehicle, while on a road-trip in America through all 48 adjoining US states.

Drivers Wayne Gerdes from Wadsworth, Illinois, and Chris Bernius from New York City, successfully piloted a factory-standard 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid sedan through a 12 638.4km route across America and achieved an average fuel consumption of 3.64l/100km, beating the car’s official EPA highway fuel consumption figure by 61.37 percent.

Kia’s 48-state challenge was completed in 14 days driving an average of 902km per day.  The Optima Hybrid used just over 5.5 tanks of petrol to complete the route, recording an average distance of 2269km between fill-ups. To comply with Guinness World Record guidelines, the Optima Hybrid had to carry two people and their luggage throughout the journey.

The record attempt was verified by Philip Robertson, Adjudicator at Guinness World Records, who also presented the drivers with their Guinness World Record certificate at an official handover ceremony at Kia Motors’ manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia on September 12.

The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous US states in a petrol hybrid car,” which is a new category created by Guinness World Records.  In order to qualify for a new record, the Kia Optima Hybrid was required to achieve a minimum of 4.49l/100km, which the fuel-sipping Optima Hybrid exceeded by 23 percent.

After a send-off by local dignitaries and Kia team members on August 26 at Kia’s manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia, the drivers departed on their epic journey in a clockwise direction.  They finished their route in the city of Greenville, South Carolina, just over two weeks later on September 9.

After a rigorous accreditation process by Guinness World Records, the drivers and car were transported to West Point for the closing ceremony and celebration.

Kia Motors Corporation COO and senior executive vice president Thomas Oh said: "Kia Motors is deeply proud to have set a new Guinness World Record.  It is testament to the quality of the design, engineering and production methods of the Kia Optima Hybrid.  The drivers had to complete their unsupported drive through all kinds of American terrain and weather conditions and they did it without a single hitch from the Optima Hybrid while setting what is such an impressive fuel consumption figure.

"While travelling across the United States the Optima Hybrid experienced temperatures ranging from more than 118 degrees Fahrenheit to less than freezing point.  The team climbed through the formidable Rocky mountain chain and negotiated rush hour traffic in Chicago, New York City and Las Vegas – which makes the Optima Hybrid’s fuel consumption figure all the more impressive," he said.

Record-breaking driver, Wayne Gerdes, said, “The Kia Optima Hybrid was the perfect vehicle for this long road trip.  It is spacious, comfortable and fun-to-drive, and the parallel gasoline-electric powertrain provided considerable efficiency at highway speeds and the car performed flawlessly throughout the drive.

“The remarkable economy figure we achieved included driving in all kinds of conditions, from straight open highway and deserts to gridlocked city traffic, so this really was the ultimate demonstration of the real-world fuel economy that any Optima Hybrid owner can achieve with attention to the details of their driving style.”

Congratulations to Bill and Jess for being mentioned in this 5 star review!

5 Star Review on Edmunds -

  • "Our car shopping experience with Bill at Broadway Kia was the best buying experience we have had in our 41 years of car buying. Quick indeed, and no pain involved. We saw a car in the ad in the morning, called to see if it was available in the late afternoon and headed over to the dealership when we learned it was still available. AND IT WAS!! So we gave the positive nod and then sat down for the wait, which was short and sweet. Jess, a delightful young lady, processed the paperwork with grace and speed as well. We really appreciated the KIA SPORTAGE 101 lesson that Bill provided us before we left the lot. Thanks." - llepore

2011 Kia Optima Most Gorgeous Car Under $20K, Esquire

Kia_optima_hybrid
The sophisticated men's lifestyle magazine Esquire has named the 2011 Kia Optima the "Most Gorgeous Car Under $20K". Optima also got notoriety as one of only nine finalists for the "The 2011 Esquire Design and Technology Awards".

The 2011 Kia Optima is a mid-size four-door sedan that has been manufactured by Kia Motors since the year 2000. The vehicle has been successfully marketed world-wide through various model names.

The first generation Kia Optima were marketed as the Optima in the United States and as the Kia Magentis in Europe and Canada in 2002. The second generation model was called the Kia Lotze and Kia used the name Kia K5 for the South Korean market. The name Magentis was used globally, except for the United States and Malaysia where the countries used the name Optima. Today, Kia uses the name Optima for all markets except China, where they will use the South Korean market name.

As for the popularity that the Kia Optima has been receiving as of late, it is for the 2011 stylish "deceptively simple, yet classy design that exudes refinement and luxury at an outstanding value”. The Optima is happy to be receiving critical acclaim for its “superior combination of world-class design, performance and long list of convenience features.”

United States production of Kia Optima got underway last week at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, where editors stated that the car had a "clean and inspiring design that provides a refined and upscale feel at an extraordinary value.”

According to the press release sharing the high accolades about the Kia Optima, Michael Sprague, the vice president of marketing & communication for Kia Motors America declared, "Esquire defines and shapes men's style and fashion in today's contemporary culture, and this recognition further validates the Optima's tremendous value proposition with its unmatched combination of world-class design, advanced technology, and fun-to-drive performance. The stunning design and value of the Optima has significantly increased awareness, perception and consideration for the Kia brand and with demand continuing to outpace supply we are looking forward to the first U.S.-built Optimas arriving in showrooms in the coming weeks."

The 2011 Kia Optima is available in the LX, EX and the SX. It offers many conveniences in luxury and technology, including the AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SiriusXM Traffic™ Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service, auxiliary and USB audio input jacks and standard Bluetooth® wireless connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls.

The 2011 Kia Optima offers three powerful, fuel-efficient engines: a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter GDI turbo or a 2.4-liter hybrid. Lastly, all this style and technology only runs approximately $19,200.

These are the reasons the Kia Optima has won accolades from Esquire, as well as being named a 2011 "Editors' Most Wanted" vehicle by Edmunds' Inside Line, a 2011 "Best New Model" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance, making the "Ward's 10 Best Interiors" list, being one of the 2011 "Top Safety Picks" by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and receiving an overall five-star crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
